Introduction to solar terms

The beginning of summer is the 7th solar term in the 24 solar terms, the first solar term of summer, and the festival time is on May 05-07 of the Gregorian calendar every year. At this time, the handle of the Big Dipper points to the southeast, and the ecliptic longitude of the sun reaches 45°. Almanac: "Dou refers to the southeast, Wei is Lixia, everything has grown up so far, so the name Lixia is also." "After the beginning of summer, the sunshine increases, gradually warms up, and thunderstorms increase. The beginning of summer is an important solar term that marks the growth of all things in the peak season. When it comes to the beginning of summer, everything flourishes.

Lixia means farewell to spring and is the beginning of summer, so it is also called "the end of spring". Spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Due to China's vast territory and large north-south span, the natural rhythm of different places is different. At the beginning of summer, only the area south of Nanling in China presents a summer scene of "green trees and long summer days, and buildings are reflected in the pond"; Parts of the northeast and northwest are just getting the breath of spring at this time.

Phenological phenomena

The "Lixia" solar term has arrived, and since then the wind has been warm and the days are long, and everything is luxuriant. Although it is the first solar term to enter the summer, the summer scene of "green trees and long summer days" only exists in the south of Nanling, China, and for most of the country, it is still in the middle and late spring of red and purple and fragrant. When the time comes, everything grows up. Just like the Ming people's "Zunsheng Eight Notes": "On the day of Mengxia, heaven and earth begin to meet, and all things are showing." ”

One waits for the mole to sing, the second waits for the earthworm to come out, and the third waits for the king melon to grow

Some ancient works divide Lixia into three phases, one for the mole to sing, the second for the earthworm to come out, and the third for the king to grow a melon; It is said that in this solar term, the chirping of moles in the field can be heard first (one is the sound of frogs), then earthworms can be seen digging in the earth, and then the vines of the king melon begin to climb and grow rapidly. At this time, the frogs begin to make noise about the arrival of summer, the earthworms are busy helping the farmers to loosen the soil, and the wild vegetables in the countryside are also competing with each other to grow day by day.

Solar term customs

On the day of the beginning of summer, many places have the customs of eating "Lixia rice", eating eggs, weighing people and tasting three new things. In the beginning of summer, people's metabolism is accelerated, and the blood supply to the heart and brain is insufficient, which often makes people irritable, tired and lazy. Work and rest time should be reasonably arranged, nutrients should be supplemented, and correct health care methods should be adopted.

Summer rituals

The "summer" of "Rikyutsu" means "big", which means that the plants sown in the spring have grown upright. The twenty-four solar terms reflect the changes of the four seasons of "qi", and the changes of qi are related to the changes in the natural rhythm. In ancient times, people attached great importance to the etiquette of Lixia. On this day of the beginning of summer, ancient people held a ceremony to welcome summer.

Taste the new ritual

In the Lixia custom in the south of the Yangtze River, there is the so-called "seeing three new", which is to eat some fresh and tender things that grow out of this season. In Jiangsu and Zhejiang, there is a custom of "trying the new in the summer". There is a proverb in Suzhou that "the beginning of summer sees three new". "Sanxin" refers to freshly ripened cherries, green plums, and wheat. People first worship their ancestors with these "three new", and then people taste it.

In Changshu, people taste new things in summer, and the food is more abundant, and there is a saying of "nine meat and eighteen vegetables". Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui and other places, people still retain the ancient custom of eating black rice in Lixia, black rice is a kind of purple-black glutinous rice, is to collect the leaves of the wild plant black tree to cook soup, use this soup to soak the glutinous rice for half a day, and then take it out and put it into the wooden retort to steam it.

Egg fighting game

"Lixia eggs, full of streets", egg fighting is usually a children's game. To use hard-boiled eggs, usually boiled eggs in the shell of white water (the shell should not be broken), soaked in cold water, and then packed in a net pocket made of colored silk or velvet thread, so that the child hangs around the neck. The rules of egg fighting are very simple, to put it bluntly, it is "better than whose eggshell is hard": everyone holds eggs, the sharp one is the head, the round is the tail, the egg head hits the egg head, the egg tail hits the egg tail, one by one fights over, the fight breaks the shell, admits defeat, and then eats the egg, and the last left that the fight can not be broken Xiaoqiang, is respected as the "egg king".

As for why you want to fight eggs, the folk saying is: "Hanging eggs on the chest in the summer, it is difficult for the villain to fight in the summer".
